BYZANTIUM (330 – 1453)
The preparation of this collection involved an interpretation of the features of Byzantine art. The goal of Byzantine art was to exalt the church and state, and while it is a form of medieval Christian art, it interpreted the traditions of earlier ages in light of Christian belief. In architecture, the basilica plan and plastic architectural elements gain importance. While the making of statues continued during early times it was later prohibited and symbolic representation became fundamental in monumental depictions (mosaics and frescoes), and in miniatures and icons.
